One of the many benefits of being a member of the Crime Writers’ Association is that you get to attend our criminally good conferences. Each year we travel to a different part of the country and have lots of fun, socialising, networking – and listening to fascinating speakers who share their expertise on topics we might be able to use in our next novels.
We also talk about how we as an organisation can better serve our members, and discuss crime writing in general, the state of publishing today, what we’re reading, what fictional or true crime we’re watching on film or TV and who will win this year’s Daggers. As with any group of different people from varying backgrounds, conversation does occasionally stray beyond crime books. The merits of food and drink and in particular the restaurants and bars in the area where we’re staying tend to strongly feature!
All things Agatha
This year we are at the Imperial Hotel in Torquay, with an Agatha Christie themed weekend of talks and events. We will also be hearing from specialists in cyber crime and people smuggling as well as being briefed by the Society of Authors on the latest developments in tackling copyright infringement. And that’s all in addition to the swish gala dinner, drinks receptions and fantastic private tours of the Christie exhibit at the Torquay Museum as well as her stunning residence, Greenway.
The conference is only open to CWA members, although they can bring along non-CWA members as their guests. However, on the Sunday afternoon, the 19th, some of your favourite authors – names under hats for now – will be talking about their work and signing copies of their books in the hotel in a general ‘meet the author’ event organised in conjunction with Waterstones. This is open to everyone – all crime writing fans – so do come along!
Don’t miss out!
If you are already a traditionally published crime writer, there is still time to join the CWA and sign up for the conference. But you’ll need to be quick! Accommodation can’t be guaranteed at the conference hotel at the special CWA package beyond 28 February 2021, although as long as there are places that needn’t stop you, of course. However, there’s no time limit on joining the CWA…
