Here Be Monsters
Howard Matthews
Works of: Fiction
Multiple best-selling Howard of Warwick sends Brother Hermitage, the most medieval sleuth, on another hopeless task – this time with monsters.
The previous volume seemed to go down well.
5* Old friends and possibly some new. A laugh on most pages. Characters who leap off the page they are so well written. I cannot praise it highly enough. I also can’t wait for the next book.
5* Brilliant mayhem with a lot of the old favourite characters returning for a conclave that is cover for an ingenious murder plot.
This time, there are monsters murdering people in Northantone. So said King William, so it must be true. Of course, Brother Hermitage doesn’t believe in such nonsense; it will all be some horrible misunderstanding.
In which case, explain what took Hunbeorht the hunter in the night. Followed by a fully armed Norman soldier. There are enough people in Northantone who do believe in the beast to make for a very fraught investigation.
And that’s before we hear about Wat the Weaver’s previous visit to town, and why he is not at all welcome.
Uncovering contradictions, liars and the just plain gullible has never been Hermitage’s strength, and when he’s surrounded by them, it only adds to the confusion.
Perhaps Hunbeorht had secrets? Perhaps the local Norman commander is one arrow short of a quiver? Or could the whole town be cursed and the monster is real?
It’s another highly entertaining Chronicle of Brother Hermitage.
Nearly a quarter of a million sales, thousands of reviews – most of them good – and a chance to discover that the people of the past were no better informed than we are.
