Detective Superintendent Christian Dane leads an elite team of investigators. The best of those is Hayley Cross, whose keen instincts, fierce determination and unwavering loyalty make her a force to be reckoned with.
Dane’s boss, Assistant Chief Constable Wix, orders the pair to investigate the sudden disappearance of David Booth, an elderly millionaire from Mersea Island in Essex.
Booth has four middle-aged children. Mick, the retired soldier, Gloria, the nurse, John, the entrepreneur and Jane, the barmaid. The family members are in conflict with one another. The only thing they seem to have in common is a desperate need for David Booth’s money.
The discovery of Booth’s body shifts the inquiry’s focus. John dies in suspicious circumstances alongside a note confessing to his father’s murder. Dane quickly exposes the deception behind the staged suicide.
Working with Cross, Dane uncovers a web of lies and dismantles alibis to identify a prime suspect.
As the detectives close in to make the arrest events take a violent turn, with disastrous consequences for them both.
