The Saracen’s Dagger is a tale of mystery, treachery, and mayhem, steeped in medieval history.
In the England of 1215, rebellion stirs across the land, and treachery turns to murder. The Axholme estates of Lord William de Mowbray sit at the crossroads between the armies of powerful barons with grievances against the tyrannical King John, and those loyal to him. Amid this turmoil, the theft of a legendary treasure known as The Saracen’s Dagger is at the heart of a treacherous plot instigated by the King’s emissary.
When two noblewomen are murdered, suspicions fall on Hal Crowder, a wildfowler who lives a solitary existence in the fens. Hal becomes a hunted fugitive and his battle to prove his innocence appears hopeless. As an assassin roams Axholme, and powerful armies prepare to clash to decide the future of England, the fortunes of two men at the opposite ends of society are drawn together to hunt down the killer before he can strike again.
Historian Robert Fish and author Charles Cornell have teamed up to recreate the lost landscape of the North Lincolnshire fens in the 13th century, where survival means harnessing all that these ancient wetlands can provide, and where justice under feudal rule is harsh and unforgiving.
