Cassandra Clark
Clark has had 12 plays in radio, tv , theatre and music theatre commissioned and performed and has had over thirty contemporary paperback romances published. She is the author of a 12-book medieval mystery series featuring nun sleuth Hildegard of Meaux set during the turbulent reign of King Richard II and a trilogy ending with the coup by his cousin, later self-crowned king, Henry IV.
Starting with the first of the 12 book series, HANGMAN BLIND, published by John Murray in 2008, this is the story of Hildegard, a young widow, who chooses to join the powerful Cistercian Order and is soon embroiled in the plots and counter plots of the war-mongering barons as they attempt to control the under-age king. It concludes in book 12 with DARK WATERS RISING, published in November 2022. Each book can be read as a stand-alone with Hildegard and a small group of monks militant headed by the ambiguous and charismatic abbot de Courcy whose stories continue in parallel with the fate of doomed King Richard II. In plot and counter plot, Hildegard, who a reviewer called ‘a kickass medieval nun who always gets her man’ the question remains: will she forsake the Order, or forsake Abbot de Courcy? One thing is sure. She will never forsake the much-maligned young king.
Clark’s second series THE BROKEN KINGDOM deals with the historical facts as we know them leading to the regicide when Lancastrian spy, friar Rodric Chandler, is drawn into the plot to repress free speech with the usurper’s introduction of haeretico comburendo, the burning law of 1401. To stifle dissent many books are banned and Geoffrey Chaucer is hounded into silence – and yet, luckily for us, most of his works are hustled into safety at great risk by Rodric Chandler himself.
The story about how this might have happened is told in the trilogy:
