2025 NCRM Launch in Cambridge
Amidst the towering limestone of Cambridge’s many colleges lies a somewhat unremarkable lane. Unremarkable that is, until you realise Botolph Lane is the home of a charming little bookshop specialising in crime fiction. Across the lane, a few steps away from Bodies in the Bookshop stands St Botolph’s Church, and it was there we found ourselves launching National Crime Reading Month this year.
The evening started like most other literary events with hugs and introductions. Authors catching up with one another, or perhaps meeting in person for the first time. It was wonderful to see so many readers in attendance too.
Richard Reynolds, co-owner of Bodies in the Bookshop and head judge of the CWA KAA Gold Dagger, started proceedings with a few welcoming words before introducing Barry Pike from the Margery Allingham Society. Barry went on to discuss some of the entries to the Margery Allingham short story competition, entertaining the gathered audience with notes on what the judges enjoyed about some of the stories and also what was missing from others.
Barry went on to announce Helen Gray’s short story, Unsupervised Dead Women, as the winner of the 2025 Margery Allingham Competition. We were delighted that Helen was able to attend in person and accept her certificate.
The remainder of the evening was handed over to Heather Fitt, General Coordinator of the CWA, who hosted a Noir at the Bar event. Six crime authors – Jamie West, Rory Clements, Victoria Dowd, Bonnie MacBird, Linda Mather and Fiona Veitch Smith – entertained the audience with readings from their latest books, and in Victoria’s case from her forthcoming publication.
It was lovely to hear what a nice time everyone had, and many books were bought and signed on the night too.
The CWA would like to extend its thanks to Richard and John from Bodies in the Bookshop for agreeing to host our launch this year. If you’re ever in Cambridge, do be sure to visit the shop, we’re certain you’ll find something to your taste.
