The Crime Writers’ Association

Beware! Author Services Scam

Recently, authors have been receiving phishing emails from a scammer claiming to be the CWA, and offering high-priced author services. The emails come from “Sam Crime Support” who purports to be from “CWA Customer Support.”

This is not us. Do not send these people money.

The emails, which come from several gmail addresses, are personalised, and contain detailed information about the recipients’ books. They also advertise services such as “market analysis,” “trend analysis,” “positioning strategies,” “audience insights,” and so forth.

The CWA does not offer these services. Moreover, we never approach individual authors with offers of marketing or other services.

Some of the emails offer guest spots in CWA publications.

CWA members can contribute to our publications for free. Non-members are ineligible.

Some of the emails say that they can guarantee eligibility for the CWA Daggers… For a price.

All traditionally published authors are eligible to enter their books into the Daggers. Self-published CWA members may also enter their own books. You can read about eligibility and entry here.

Recent emails have become quite sophisticated, using a letterhead that includes our logo, the email of our communications manager, and a fake address in New York.

This is not us. Do not send these people money.

Please don’t be fooled, and don’t engage with these scammers. We have reported this scam to Action Fraud and the National Cyber Security Centre.

If you receive a solicitation from these, or any other scammers, do not engage, but report to the above authorities.
