In 1931 the Englishman PJ Sillitoe was appointed Chief Constable in Glasgow, to clear up the razor gang warfare. In this novel, which feels grimly authentic, two of his fictional detectives including Inspector Jimmy Dreghorn deal with the gangs, but also with corruption and vicious murder within the city’s elite.
