Forgotten Heroines: the Diaries of Ysabel Birkbeck
Marsali Taylor
Works of: Non-fiction
In 1916, Scottish surgeon Dr Elsie Inglis and an all-women group of nurses, orderlies and ambulance drivers set out for the Romanian Front. The aim of the Scottish Women’s Hospital was to provide front-line care for wounded soldiers. Ysabel Birkbeck was one of the ambulance drivers, and her lively account describes the long journey across Russia, her first experience of driving the wounded, coming under fire, riding out for dinner with a General in the front-line trench, two retreats, winter in Odessa and returning home via the March Revolution in St Petersburg. Her diary is illustrated with her own snapshots and drawings.
