Doc Brodie Buchanan, a Scottish surgeon serving in the Union Army as a contract surgeon had seen death and bloodshed in several theaters of the war. Now senior surgeon with the 32nd Iowa Infantry he has had to deal with the maimed and wounded in the disastrous Red River Campaign of 1864. After the Battle of Pleasant Hill when General Nathaniel Banks decides to retreat to Alexandria Brodie and his fellow surgeons volunteer to stay with the wounded, in the certain knowledge that they will be taken prisoners.
After enduring the long forced march to Camp Ford in Texas there is much more to endure. The sadistic and tyrannical Lieutenant MacEachern is making the POWs lives a misery and men have many reasons to be fearful for their lives. But Brodie discovers one severely wounded patient is not what they seem and Brodie must risk everything if he is to save many lives, including his own.
