But why, you may ask, did a skilled surgeon like Finlay Drummond find himself on an expedition out to the Rockies to trap beavers and risk losing his scalp, or any of the multitude of ways a man could die and be forgotten? Well, it certainly wasn’t how he had expected his life to go. Fateful events had conspired against him to follow the convoluted journey that would take him from grave robbing as a medical student in Boston to life on a whaler in the South Seas as the ship surgeon, where hard-bitten whalers christened him Sawbones.

Dueling with a bitter enemy in St. Louis ended with him joining a trapping expedition headed up the Missouri River to the Rockies. There no one cared much about who he was or what he had done.

Or so he thought.
